The design concept for the interior renovation of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is centered around connecting the building back to the Mississippi River. The ebb and flow of the river's edge was once a natural process, unconstrained by modern flooding technology, such as levees. The conceptual approach to the wooden benches, located at each of the six skylight areas in the building, calls back to this ever-changing riverbank.
Through research and prototyping, I was able to construct mock-ups and optimize the efficiency, functionality, and comfort of each bench, while utilizing standard profile cuts across all variations. I also created detail drawings, explaining the construction of each bench, as well as each planter system that attaches to the back. This project is currently out for bid, and will soon involve working alongside a fabricator to realize the design in full.
