New Orleans, Louisiana
Spring 2018, Professor Stuart Hurt
The neighborhood this proposed restaurant design is located in is a quickly developing area, in close proximity to Tulane. After visiting the site, I realized the lack of vegetarian/vegan dining options on the street. I decided to design a vegan restaurant that doubled as an animal sanctuary. The massing was informed by the surrounding context of shotgun homes, as well as the farmhouse typology. The building is pulled apart, revealing a courtyard in the center. The courtyard is an outdoor dining space as well as a space for the animals to roam free. The cage-like covering that begins at the street entrance and continues into the courtyard is meant to provide an atmosphere that provokes people to think about humans relationships/treatment with animals and nature.
